Abstract

Art as a privileged medium for human projections, the north Chile rock art ‘example

The graphic act responds to a complex process where the artist integrates the projections of a whole society. He makes choices in term of themes, techniques, style, narration which are as many clues of the projection of the systems of representation of a group. In the absence of data on the traditional culture of the ancient populations, their historical or mythological narratives, rock art offers an angle conducive to the study of their cultural structures, of their abstract values. The different socio-economic contexts and the variety of the artistic expressions allow the researcher to reveal the richness of prehistoric populations’ identity projections. In the far north of Chile, the numerous overlays of paintings visible on the sites of Vilacaurani and Incani lead us to identify the regularities or to extract the variations in themes’ choice, figurations, scenes’ compositions, in order to approach the mechanisms betraying their ethic value. This scientific approach is accompanied by a cultural bias where the interweaving of the researcher’s representation systems with those of prehistoric cultures, leads also to the researcher value system.
