Résumé :
Dans un ouvrage posthume paru en 2016, Alain Testart propose une interprétation renouvelée de l’iconographie pariétale paléolithique incluant une nouvelle théorie des signes. La composition des corpus graphiques ainsi que leur structure le conduisent à reconnaître sur les parois des grottes les indices d’une vision du monde totémique. La grotte symboliserait un utérus mythique abritant l’état primordial du monde. Cette interprétation de l’iconographie pariétale fait écho à un usage croissant des ontologies en Préhistoire. Nous proposons ici une lecture critique de cet ouvrage et plus largement de l’interprétation des manières d’être au monde des sociétés préhistoriques au travers du regard croisé de l’ethnologie et de l’archéologie préhistorique.

Graphics and ontology in Prehistory – A cross-disciplinary perspective (ethnography and archaeology) in Art et religion de Chauvet à Lascaux by Alain Testart
In a posthumous book published in 2016, Alain Testart offers a renewed interpretation of the Paleolithic cave iconography including a new signs theory. The composition of the graphics and their structure lead him to recognize on the cave walls indications of totemism. The cave would symbolize a mythic womb housing the primordial state of the world. This interpretation of the cave iconography echoes an increasing use of ontologies in Prehistory. We propose here a critical reading of this book and more broadly of the interpretation of the ways of being in the world of the prehistoric societies through ethnology and prehistoric archaeology.
